| Grade | Effect |

| 1% | Indistinguishable from level in practice. |
| 2% | Practical maximum. Roughly halves the train a locomotive will lift. |
| 3% | Steep. Short trains, or a banking engine at the back. |
| +0.5% | The effective penalty added by an 18″ radius curve in HO. |
| 75 mm | Clearance from railhead to the underside of the deck above, in HO — 3″, including the thickness of the sub-roadbed. |

Work down the list. In almost every case the cause is mechanical or electrical contact, and almost never the locomotive you are blaming. To describe a fault in your own words and be taken straight to the checks, use the repair bay.

| Derails at the same spot every time | A kink at a rail joint, a tight gauge through a curve, or a check rail set too wide. | Run a track gauge through it. Sight along the rail at eye level — kinks are obvious from that angle and invisible from above. |
| Stalls on a turnout | Dead frog and a short wheelbase, or point blades not making contact. | Add feeders each side, power the frog, or fit a keep-alive. Clean the faces of the blades and their stock rails. |
| Jerky at low speed everywhere | Dirty wheels — usually, not dirty track. | Clean the wheels with isopropyl alcohol. Then set CV2 so the model just creeps at step 1. |
| Locomotive hums but will not move | A DC model on a DCC layout, or a decoder that has lost its address. | Check whether it has a decoder at all. If it does, put it on the programming track and read CV1 and CV29. |
| Everything shuts down entering a loop | Reverse loop with no auto-reverser, or gaps in one rail only. | Gap both rails at both ends of the loop and feed the isolated section through an auto-reverser. |
| Wagons uncouple on a gradient | Coupler height mismatch, or a vertical kink where the grade begins. | Check every coupler against the height gauge. Ease the vertical transition over a foot or so. |
| The last wagon is pulled off on curves | A light wagon at the front of a heavy train, or an S-curve with no straight between. | Weight it to the NMRA figure; put the light stock at the rear; insert a vehicle's length of straight between opposing curves. |
| Sound cuts out over a turnout | A momentary loss of pickup. | Keep-alive capacitor, all-wheel pickup, and clean the frog area. |
| Turnout will not hold its position | Ballast glued into the throwbar, or a tired solenoid spring. | Pick the ballast out with a scalpel; if it is the spring, an over-centre wire or a stall motor solves it permanently. |
| Runs fine alone, stalls with a train | Not enough weight on the driven axles, or a grade steeper than you measured. | Add weight low in the locomotive; measure the grade with a spirit level and a metre rule rather than trusting the drawing. |
